 Simon's Update

The Week in One Word: Scorchio!

What a week it has been!

I cannot thank everyone in our Brookfield community enough for the way you have pulled together over the past few days. Parents, carers, staff and children have all shown such flexibility, patience and resilience in responding to the exceptionally hot weather. Everyone has simply soldiered on, adapted to changing plans and approached the week with care, kindness and good humour.

I was incredibly proud of our children. They managed the conditions brilliantly, taking responsibility for themselves, looking out for their friends and following our guidance to stay safe, hydrated and as comfortable as possible. It was wonderful to see older children reminding younger ones to drink water, seek shade and take things a little more slowly.

Thankfully, our building was able to provide a number of cooler learning spaces throughout the day, allowing us to adjust timetables and keep learning going wherever possible. However, this week has also provided an important opportunity to reflect on how our building performs during periods of extreme weather.

One of my priorities over the coming weeks will be to review this with Camden as part of the school's Net Zero project. The aim of the investment was to help the building better manage both extremes of temperature—the freezing conditions we experienced earlier this year and the soaring temperatures we've seen this week. We'll be looking carefully at what worked well, where improvements can still be made and what further steps we can take to ensure our school continues to provide the very best learning environment for every child, whatever the weather.

I'll keep our community updated as those conversations progress. Our ambition is simple: to ensure Brookfield remains a place where children can learn, thrive and flourish all year round, regardless of what the British weather decides to throw at us!

Thank you once again for your continued support. As always, it is hugely appreciated.

 Heatwave Fundraising

The Climate Action Group is raising money to benefit Brookfield Primary School staff and children during heatwaves. Any donation will help fund cooling solutions for the school, including fans for classrooms and longer term measures being explored together with the school.

This fundraiser has been set up through Brookfield School Community (BSC), the school's official parent charity, with the full support of the school. Updates on how funds are being used will be shared by the school as progress is made.  Thank you for any contribution or for sharing this fundraiser.

 Thank you for Donations

To all the families who have very kindly donated various items for the Roots visit to Dunkirk, thank you! I was amazed by the generosity, and the sight of the pile of donations growing each day. The boxes will be making their way from Brookfield all the way to Dunkirk on Friday evening, and I’m sure these items will be appreciated by many.

 Windrush Celebration Rescheduled

Due to the extreme heat this week, we have recscheduled our windrush celebrations and are now inviting families to bring a dish or a drink to share as part of the after school event on Friday 10th July at 3:20pm. We are really pleased to welcome the calypsonian Tobago Crusoe who was a consultant for the Olivier award-winning musical Paddington and has appeared in, and written and performed songs for, the films Paddington and Paddington II.

 Squishy Dumplings Toy warnings

We are aware that a number of children have been talking about "Squishy Dumpling" toys in school recently and that they are available to purchase from some local shops.

We wanted to make parents and carers aware that a product recall has been issued for certain Squishy Dumpling toys after they were found to contain unsafe levels of a chemical called benzene. As a result, the toys have been identified as posing a potential health risk and have been withdrawn from sale.

This notice is simply to raise awareness so that families can make informed decisions if they come across these toys. If your child already owns one, you may wish to check whether it is affected by the recall and avoid using it until you have confirmed it is safe.
