Simon's Update
It's been a busy week at Brookfield, with plenty to celebrate across the school.
Firstly, congratulations to our Year 4 pupils, who have achieved outstanding results in their Multiplication Tables Check. They have worked incredibly hard throughout the year and recorded some very strong scores. We are equally proud of our Year 1 children, whose phonics assessment results were well above national averages. These achievements are a testament to the commitment, enthusiasm and resilience of our pupils, as well as the dedication and expertise of our staff. An amazing job from children and staff alike – well done everyone!
Last weekend, through our partnership with the charity Earnt, we welcomed a fantastic team of volunteers into school to help improve our learning environment. Armed with paintbrushes and rollers, the volunteers spent the day refreshing several areas of the school, including staircases and corridors, giving parts of Brookfield a much-needed new lease of life.
Earnt works with organisations that offer incentives for volunteering, and for this particular event, Harry Styles had generously donated tickets through the charity. As a result, our team of painters and decorators were a group of very enthusiastic Harry Styles fans who had travelled considerable distances to support the school. We are incredibly grateful for their hard work and dedication, and the results have made a real difference to the appearance of the building.
A huge thank you goes to Lavina, James and the Earnt team for organising the day, and to Dan Carrier for introducing us to the charity and helping make the partnership possible.
In other news, our weekly run on the Heath has been a tremendous success. We are very fortunate to have David generously giving up his Friday mornings to organise and lead the run. It has been wonderful to see so many families taking part and enjoying the opportunity to come together as a community. Thank you to David, and to everyone who has joined us so far.
Finally, with temperatures set to rise again in the coming weeks, we are reviewing the measures we have in place to ensure that all children remain comfortable, cool and ready to learn during periods of hot weather. As temperatures in the mid-to-high 30s increasingly become something we experience more regularly rather than exceptionally, we will need to continue thinking carefully about how we adapt our routines and activities - more details below.
Best wishes,
Simon
Our Learning Week
Hot Weather Arrangements
With temperatures forecast to reach the mid to high 30s this week, we will be taking a sensible and flexible approach to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all children and staff.
Throughout the week, we will carry out regular dynamic risk assessments and make appropriate decisions based on the conditions at the time. This may include adapting playtimes and lunchtimes, modifying outdoor activities, relocating sessions indoors, adjusting PE lessons, or making changes to planned trips and visits where necessary.
If we have to make further adjustments across the week, we will be in touch to communicate them with you.
Children will be encouraged to drink water regularly, seek shade where available, and take breaks from the sun if we do go outside. We would be grateful if parents could ensure that children come to school with a named water bottle and, where appropriate, a sun hat. Sunscreen should be applied before school.
Our priority is to keep children safe, comfortable and able to enjoy their learning while remaining responsive to the changing weather conditions. Thank you for your support and understanding.
Windrush Day
Offering performances, food, an opportunity for taking pride in/celebrating our cultures and (our) shared belonging.
We invite families to bring a dish or a drink to share on Friday 26th June at 3:20pm.
A large group of people from the Caribbean crossed the Atlantic Ocean to Britain on the Empire Windrush ship, arriving on 22nd June 1948. This is why Windrush Day is celebrated every year.
From the 1940s to the 1970s, thousands of people left their homes to start a new life, and, initially on the British Government’s invitation. They came to be known as the Windrush Generation and they helped to rebuild and transform England. They made a huge impact on all aspects of British life: from their contributions to the NHS and health research, to transport, politics, businesses, sport, literature, and culture.
This story of migration resonates with other experiences of migration and belonging, encapsulating a collective memory and experience of the Caribbean diaspora in the UK.
We're delighted to be joined by calypsonian Tobago Crusoe who was a consultant for the Olivier award-winning musical Paddington and has appeared in(, and written and performed songs for,) the films Paddington and Paddington II.
Coffee Mornings and Family Sessions – We'd Love Your Input
As we begin planning for next academic year, we are keen to create more opportunities for parents and carers to engage with life at Brookfield.
We know that families value opportunities to learn more about the work we do in school, discuss changes in education, and gain a deeper understanding of our approach to teaching and learning. With this in mind, we are exploring a programme of coffee mornings, workshops and family sessions that would bring parents, carers and staff together throughout the year.
These sessions could cover a wide range of topics, from curriculum updates and supporting learning at home, to developments in education and opportunities to discuss school priorities and initiatives. Most importantly, we want to ensure that any sessions we offer are genuinely useful, relevant and accessible for our families.
To help us shape this programme, we would be grateful if you could spare a few minutes to complete the Google Form linked below. Your feedback will help us understand which topics are of greatest interest and what times and formats would work best for families.
Please follow the link below and let us know what you think. Thank you in advance for your support – we look forward to working even more closely with our parent community next year.
