Black History Month at Brookfield
On Monday, we kicked off celebrating Black History Month with an assembly. This year's theme is Saluting Our Sisters and it focuses on the achievements and contributions of Black women and their part in shaping the history of Great Britain.
At Brookfield, we make sure that communities, backgrounds and heritage of our children are reflected in the curriculum. As they go through each school year, they learn about significant figures who shaped the history of Britain and world history from a range of texts, in literacy, reading, science or history lessons.
During the month of October, children will read traditional African or Caribbean stories, each year group will learn about a significant Black woman from past or present day and by the end of the month we would love each class to present what they have learned to the rest of the school during celebratory assembly.
We would like to invite parents/carers of black heritage into school throughout October to share stories of their choice celebrating black cultures, read a story to a group of children or perhaps teach us a few greetings in an African language. Equally, if you would like your child to share a story, information, artifacts or photos with their class, please contact your child’s class teacher or Agata (history lead) year6@brookfield.camden.sch.uk

Perhaps, if we hone our skills in time, it could be a way to produce eco-friendly Christmas presents as well as benefit our guts!?
Speaking of festivities, with Halloween on the horizon you’ve probably heard about Brookfield’s annual costume swap, taking place in the junior playground on the 19th October after school. Other ways to reduce impact could be to eliminate plastic halloween paraphernalia and buy sweet treats with less packaging (we may love Quality Street but…)
This could carry over into our children’s birthday events and parties and even Christmas for those who celebrate it. For example, some people thoughtfully add a ‘pre loved gifts welcome’ note to their party invitations, to remove the taboo around second hand presents. To facilitate this there’s the wonderful Toy Project close by, on Junction Road (run by an ex Brookfield teacher), a treasure trove of second hand toys, and they also do vouchers.
I have also seen eco-conscious friends use blu-tac instead of tape to secure wrapped gifts they’re giving, meaning both the wrapping paper and the blu-tac can be used again. Alternatively, using paper bags to place presents in and not writing on them means they can be reused over and over.
If you have an eco-parenting tip or eco-tip in general we’d love to hear from you! Contact us and/or join the CAG by emailing: kate.taylor@gmail.com
