Laurel’s Update

Since my last update, we had a joyous and productive Friends of Brookfield Community Day on Saturday. Thanks to all the families who supported this by planting, painting, rebuilding and window cleaning! You can see the outcome of these efforts in the Junior playground and the photos below. We are already planning an Autumn event, let me know if you have any suggestions!

The Summer term is usually a busy one and this week has been no exception! We have had class photos taken, Year 3 Parents and Children Maths workshop, year 5 classes swimming at the lido, Channing students volunteering and today Conker class are at the British Museum!

Today we are also celebrating ‘Maths Day’ and I have enjoyed visiting classes and seeing creative maths learning taking place. Thanks to Lucy for organising and our creative staff for delivering such great learning experiences. We hope you were able to participate in the gallery walk in the playgrounds after school and in the year 6 suitcase sale!

Our Infant and Junior choirs did us proud on Monday and please read this glowing feedback from Sheena Masson, Camden’s Primary Music Co-ordinator:

“Thank you for taking part in the Camden Music Cluster Festivals on Monday. The Brookfield individual performances were lovely and really demonstrated the progress the children make in singing as they move form KS1 to KS2. Both performances were focused and assured. The sound of the KS2 choir was very refined; several colleagues commented on the performance at the end of the event.

I hope the children enjoyed being part of the festival. There certainly made a really joyous sound altogether and they were a fantastic audience for each other.

Thanks and congratulations to the young performers and to you.”

We are happy to share with you that we have 5 great candidates from across the community. Please read all five statements and get ready to place your votes. Look out for statements from each of the five prospective Governors and ballot papers that will be distributed on Tuesday 28th June.

SEND at Brookfield

Dear Parents and Carers,

I am writing to invite you to take part in our Special Educational Needs (SEND) parent survey so that we can understand what is working well for SEND support at Brookfield and how we can make improvements moving forward. Your responses would be greatly appreciated in order to get the best understanding of how the SEND community of Brookfield feels about provision in the school.

We will analyse the results before the end of July and then share with the Brookfield SEND community what is working well and where we can improve in September.

To complete the survey please click on the link below:

The deadline for completing this survey is  Friday 1st July.

Please let me know if I can support you in any way or if you have any questions.

Many thanks,

Laura Smale

Year 6 Safety Workshop

On Thursday 30th June, we are pleased to welcome our Safer School’s Officer: PC Baird to Brookfield. PC Baird will be delivering a workshop for the year 6 children to help prepare them for their transition to secondary school. The workshop will include topics such as:   staying safe, social media and bullying.

We hope that the children find this useful and I am sure they will have lots of questions for PC. Baird!

We currently have places available for our free Summer Camp which runs from 25th July- 29th of July at Channing Senior School (near Waterlow Park). The camp is from 9.30-3.30pm each day with ‘educational fun’ lessons in the morning and activities organised by Active Day Camp in the afternoon (https://activedaycamps.com/camps). Lunch and snacks are also provided- free of charge.

The camp is for children in year 5 however, we will now be welcoming year 6 pupils who may be interested.  We are prioritising children who are eligible for pupil premium funding.   If you are interested in your child attending the summer camp, please email Faye at: f.winslade@brookfield.camden.sch.uk Please note that this does not confirm a place and we will confirm places by next Friday.

The Summer camp was a huge success last year and we do hope you will consider joining us. It is run by a mixture of Brookfield and Channing teachers and children from other local schools have also been invited.  I have attached a letter with further information.

Garden Update

The growing season is in full swing, and pupils, teachers and parents have been getting out in the Brookfield garden spaces to improve green areas and learn about gardening. The quiet area in the junior playground has seen mint, herbs, beans, potatoes, passion flower, jasmine, and shade-loving plants like ferns and hostas planted with lots of compost to improve the soil.

Year 5 classes learnt about how potatoes self-reproduce themselves through some theatre games, and Year 3 did some seed sowing of ingredients for the Summer Rolls they’ll be eating later this term. Pupils across the school have contributed ideas for the new Forest Garden and green areas generally with members of Eco-Committee taking a questionnaire to their classes. Designs for the new green education area are in development, so watch this space for more feedback asked from the school community!

A big thanks goes to Camden Garden Centre for donating gift vouchers to buy plants, and to the Real Seeds Company and Tamar Organics who donated heirloom and organic seeds for our education programmes.

Community Day

Thank you to all the volunteers that came along to community day it was an awesome here are some highlights.

Music News

The choirs were an absolute credit to the school on Monday when they sang at the Festival at Gospel Oak School. Watch this space for photos next week!

Our next exciting date is the Summer Fair on Saturday 9th July. The Infant Choir will be performing at 1pm (meeting me at 12.45pm) and the Junior Choir will be performing at 1.30pm (meeting me at 1.15pm). We hope that you can come – you will need to accompany your child at the fair and stay when they are performing.

Big Battery Hunt

Well done and thank you to everybody who sent me their battery recycling count. As a school, we have saved 1028 batteries from landfill during the Big Battery Hunt! A particularly big well done to Ethan in Year 5, who collected over 600 batteries from family, friends and neighbours. I am going to put Ethan forward to be recognised as a Big Battery Hunt Recycling Pioneer.
