Laurels Update

This week our year 1 children have had a busy week with a trip to Golders Hill Park as part of their science learning about animals and a PAC maths session with parents. On Tuesday, our year 6 children took the short walk up the hill to Channing School where they enjoyed a performance of The Sound of Music. This afternoon, year 4 children have been inspired by a concert by Palisander Recorder group who are described as “Early Music’s very own Spice Girls” to help launch their recorder project.

Covid has continued to challenge us with children and staff unable to attend school. Thank you for testing regularly, following the latest guidance and please let us know if your family needs any support during isolation.

Next week, we look forward to celebrating Children’s Mental Health Week on the theme of growing together. We have special workshops, assemblies and will be trialing longer morning break times. Please let us know your feedback on this by emailing admin@brookfield.camden.sch.uk.

Afro-Congo Charity

Thanks to parents and carers who have supported the Afro-Congo bake sale this afternoon. Here is a message from Prenda, a Brookfield ex-pupil who runs the charity:

The goal of our fundraiser is to raise money for 12 orphans from the ages of 2 through 12 who have never had the opportunity to study before. The money raised will go towards building a primary school for them to study in. We want them to have this space because we want to make sure that they can all reach their levels of education at their own place before we can send them off to a real school. In addition we will also use the money to buy school supplies such as desks and chairs. In order to be able to carry out this project properly we are aiming to raise £7000, of course we are aware that we won’t be able to raise all of this at one go but we do plan on running more fundraisers in the future.

Here are some pictures of the work we have already started:

Year 1 PAC Maths

Thank you to those of you who were able to attend the Year 1 PAC maths morning on Tuesday. Here is an overview of what we discussed in the session:

Children’s Mental Health Week

Next week (week commencing 7th February) is Children’s Mental Health Week! We will be exploring mental health, emotions and emotional regulation throughout the week through a series of lessons and assemblies. On Friday 11th February, we invite children to ‘Dress to Express’ – this could be fancy dress, their favourite colour, their future job – whatever they like! We will be collecting donations on the gates for children’s mental health charity, Place2Be. Thank you! We can’t wait to see how the children (and staff) dress to express.

Wellbeing Workshops

Brookfield has been one of four schools chosen to receive wellbeing workshops for Years 1-6 from The Lily-Jo Project. These will be happening on Wednesday 9th February in the afternoon and each workshop will last 45 minutes each. Children will learn how to be a hero of their own mental health and will come away equipped with more knowledge around emotional literacy and emotional self-awareness.

The Sound of Music

This week, year 6 were excited to visit Channing Senior school to watch the 6th form production of: The Sound of Music. The children loved the catchy sounds, brilliant acting and amazing theatre set. It also linked perfectly with our history topic: WW2. Thank you to the staff and parents who made this trip possible and of course, Channing school for inviting us!

PTA News

World Book Day PTA Events

In the lead up to World Book Day on Thursday 3rd March the PTA have lots fun activities planned and ways to help raise money to buy the School some brilliant new books!

Following the success of last year, the PTA will be organising another fantastic Book Character Trail and Competition.

Here’s how you can help or take part…

  • We need suggestions for your favourite book characters to be displayed on the trail. Please email us with the character name and book to: brookfieldschoolpta@gmail.com
  • We need volunteer homes/families to display a book character from their window – this must be visible from the pavement and be displayed from 3rd – 6th March
  • Please contact us if you can host a character on the trail (and we’ll get the character to you)

There will be a competition to identify all the Trail characters on a checklist to be submitted to the PTA. For completing the trail you will have a chance to win a prize goody bag!

Over half term we will be holding a Sponsored Reading Challenge – the download form will be on the site next week.

We love to be green & help the environment at Brookfield so on Friday 25th February we will hold a World Book Day Costume Swap.

We will also have a Bake Sale at the same time as the Costume Swap.

On World Book Day itself we will be holding a Book Swap in both playgrounds. This will be a free event so come along and pick up something new to read or donate any books you no longer want.

Half term is a perfect time to have a rummage for any unwanted or outgrown dressing up or books!

Thank you and let’s make World Book Day 2022 a fantastic celebration of reading!

So in summary, we will have

  • Book trail
  • Sponsored reading over half term
  • Bake sale and costume swap before WBD
  • Book swap on WBD

Much Love

The PTA Team
