Laurels Update

This week, the children have engaged with a range of anti-bullying activities including children in years 3-6 learning in special workshops delivered by the Freshwater Theatre. One of our core values is kindness. Anti-bullying week is an opportunity to focus on this and encourage children to share with us if they experience any unkind behaviour. It is also important that we work closely with parents, you are your child’s expert, please tell us if there is anything upsetting them.

We saw a rise in COVID-19 cases this week, particularly in Year 4 Ivy class and Year 5 Willow class. We are holding up in our thoughts, all the children and families who this is affecting. These classes have temporarily been placed in ‘bubbles’ and have separate activities and spaces for breakfast club, break time, lunch and after school club. We sent a letter (see below) to the whole school about new measures that we have been advised by Public Health England to put in place. Please remember:

  • to keep your child at home and order a PCR test if they have any symptoms of COVID-19
  • parents to wear face coverings in the playgrounds
  • arriving at the designated staggered start and finish times to avoid congestion in the playgrounds

On 30th November from 5.30-6.30pm, Brookfield will be hosting our first ‘Meet the Brookfield parents’ event for prospective Reception children for September 2021. I am looking for 2 more families who would be prepared to be part of a panel to represent Brookfield – please let me know if you and your child(ren) could volunteer.

Thanks to parents and carers who were able to come to the phonics and early reading workshop this morning. You can view the resources we looked at during the workshop here. We look forward to seeing parents, carers and younger siblings at the PTA coffee morning next Friday at 9am.

Christmas Lunch

We will be serving Christmas lunch on Wednesday 15th December. If your child usually brings a packed lunch, but would like to have Christmas dinner on this day for £2.40, please email the office by latest Friday 10th December with your child’s name(s).

Partnership with Channing School

We are very excited by our blossoming partnership with Channing School and Highgate Newtown Community Centre. After an incredibly successful ‘Summer School’, Channing will be supporting our extended day provision by running some new and interesting after-school clubs for Brookfield children. For the next 6 weeks, some of our Year 5’s will enjoy exciting science lessons in Channing’s laboratory led by a science teacher and A-level science students, whilst our Year 6’s will be carrying out some mathematical, problem solving activities with the support of A-level maths students. We are also lucky enough to have some 6th form students carrying out 1:1 reading with some of our Year 2 children every Tuesday after school.

PE Update

Year 5 and 6 Football League: Well done to the teams that played this week. Next week there are no fixtures, but Brookfield will be back in action on the 30th November. Instead of having our fixtures, we will run a training session here at school Tuesday 23rd November to keep everyone ready for our next games. It will take place from 3.30 – 4.30pm in the junior playground. We will send out a letter to confirm this.

Year 2 Trip to Hampstead Heath

This week Year 2 visited the Secret Garden to have a session all about habitats. We searched for minibeasts under logs and leaves and did some pond dipping. We found all sorts of creatures, including a baby newt! This will help us with our science unit, as we will be making bug hotels later this term.

Year 2 Christmas Show

The Year 2 Christmas performance will be on Tuesday 14th December at 2pm. Please save the date as we will be inviting Year 2 parents and carers to come and watch!

Mental Health & PSHE Update

The Mental Health Support Team (MHST) are hosting more parent and carer workshops. Our Brookfield families have always enjoyed attending these and have spoken highly of them. We hope you find them useful! Timetable and booking details are below. If you have any questions, please contact Lillie: l.rosenblatt@brookfield.camden.sch.uk

Parents and carers can register for any of the above webinars through Eventbrite for free at

The Toy Project

We are always amazed at the generosity of the Toy Project just on our doorstep on Junction Road. This week this wonderful charity gave Daisy Class a beautiful brand new Ark filled with animals. It is an amazing resource sparking up good quality talk amongst the children, firing up their imaginations and affording them plenty of opportunity to work cooperatively as they helped assemble it and then play with it. If none of you know about this magical shop do make sure you check it out,  it is a treasure trove of affordable toys and they have play workshops which are particularly useful with these dark afternoons when going to the park is no longer an option. https://thetoyproject.co.uk/

Year 5 Bridge Club

Year 5 children are lucky enough to enjoy an afternoon of Bridge every Friday afternoon this term! Through playing this well-known, classic card game, we will be developing our mental arithmetic skills, our problem solving strategies and our ability to work as a team. If you see us around the school, ask us how to play! We will be launching Bridge as a club in January… keep your eyes peeled!

Events, Events, Events!

We have lots of exciting events coming up in the next few weeks. If you would like to meet some more people in the Brookfield community, get a pre loved snowman jumper, find some Xmas gifts or just have a cup of coffee we’ve got it covered! We hope you’ll have fun joining in & coming to them!

Next Week – Coffee Morning, Bake Sale & Winter Clothing Swap

On Friday 26th of November, parents, carers and children can come and have a free coffee, hot chocolate, croissant and a chat before school in the infant playground from 8.45am.

(If you want you can drop us a few coins in the tin, but no pressure)

Then from 9am join us in the bottom hall for a parent and carer coffee morning. You can just come, have a chat and meet some other Brookfield families. We will be talking a little about the PTA & where your money goes from our fund raising events. We would also love to hear from you with any questions & suggestions.

After school on the same Friday (26th November) we will be holding a Winter Themed Clothing Swap. This time it will be held in the Junior Playground.

Start digging out your old or outgrown Xmas jumpers, sparkly clothes or any winter themed outfits! It will be no cash, just drop and browse / collect. Donations welcome, but no pressure again.

A Bake Sale will run alongside, so we would love it if you could get baking for it! (No nuts please)

Coming Soon – Pub Social and Winter Fair

Another date to save! We are planning a Brookfield families Parent & Carers Pub Evening on Thursday 9th December, we would love to see you all for a long awaited social event. Location to follow…
