Newsletter 21st May

Laurel’s update

This week saw the further lifting of COVID restrictions in England. While the guidance for primary schools remains the same at the moment, we are starting to plan how we will move forward over the coming weeks. I hope you and your family are able to enjoy reunions and socialising.

In our achievement assembly this morning, Rozafa in Fern class impressed us with her amazing violin playing. She really is an inspiration and talked to us about her commitment to practice.

Brookfield leads the Early Years Hub for Camden Learning in partnership with Thomas Coram Nursery. On Wednesday, Seren, our Early Years Lead and Acorn’s class teacher, presented to Camden leaders, teachers and consultants from Southwark local authority. The training was about the new Early Years Framework being introduced in September. She focussed on the importance of keeping reading and writing joyous and how important it is to inspire and motivate learning. It is great to have Brookfield teachers sharing best practice with other schools.

Please see the year 2 curriculum letter with news of how the new Brookfield curriculum is being embraced.

Year 4 Science

This week, Year 4 took their science learning outside! After learning more about soundwaves and how they look when the volume of a sound changes, we had a go at drawing our very own soundwaves using chalk.

Book recommendation of the week

This week’s book is ‘The Promise’ by Nicola Davies, illustrated by Laura Carlin. It’s a picture book recommended to me by brilliant Norah, (TA in Year 3), which I have now shared with Heather and Fern. Here’s the blurb –

“On a mean street in a mean city, a thief tries to snatch an old woman’s bag. But she finds she can’t have it without promising something in return – to “plant them all”. When it turns out the bag is full of acorns, the young thief embarks on a journey that changes her own life and the lives of others for generations to come.”

To me it’s a book about our relationship with nature and each other as well as how our lives are interconnected. It’s not only a delightful tale for children but the illustrations and artwork are wonderful. I think that buying a good picture book is also like buying a piece of art! Our children in year 3 loved it and I hope you will too.

Louise (English and Oracy Lead)

Camden Family Learning

Camden Family Learning works in partnership with schools and venues to run a range of programmes that support parents, carers and children to learn in fun and innovative ways, following the Early Years Foundation Stage and National Curriculum. We run courses in children’s centres, schools, parks and community venues all over Camden. Please see the posters below:

Summer Fair

Provisional date for the SUMMER FAIR is Saturday 17th July, 12-3 – please put the date in your diary.

Any ideas or particular stalls you want to see / run, or general suggestions, please get in touch. We want your input to make this a joyful return to normality – a fun community event.

Tech Fundraiser

We did it! We have got to £2,595.00 donated which, with Gift Aid, gets us to £3,201.25!

This means that with the pledged £4,000 from the PTA, the school can buy enough Chromebooks to enable the teaching of technology skills to all of our students. Equal access to technology remains a priority goal for the school, led by Sus, Reception teacher and Head of Computing.
