Newsletter 16th October

NOTES ON THE DATES ABOVE: For the INSET day on Monday you can book your child’s place on the Fit for Sport holiday club website here or contact Fit For Sport at enquiries@fitforsport.co.uk or call 020 8742 4990. Please make sure you have returned you child’s permission form for the Nasal Flu Vaccine.

This term, we have welcomed 16 new children to Brookfield who have joined classes from years 1-6. It has been wonderful to meet new children and families and thanks to the children and staff who have supported the settling in process. While usual social and community activities are limited, I am sure you will join me in welcoming these new families to the Brookfield community.

The school have received concerned reports of children climbing lampposts before school starts in the morning. Please can parents ensure their children are staying safe.

It was with sadness that Brookfield heard of the news of Linda Starkey-Queen’s passing. Linda was a Brookfield governor for many years and contributed her wisdom, experience and joy to the governing body.

Camden Secondary Schools

Camden council have a film just out on what makes the secondary schools in our area stand out. You can watch it here:

Also, a reminder that the deadline for secondary school transfer applications is October 31st and you can see what open days are still happening here: https://news.camden.gov.uk/moving-on-to-secondary-school-in-camden-2021/

We have been nominated by Camden Music Service to become a ‘Music Mark’ school for the 2020/21 academic year.

The value that we place on music and our commitment to a broad and balanced curriculum has been recognised, and as a result, we have become a ‘Music Mark’ school. ‘Music Mark’ is the UK Association for Music Education; they champion and support access to music for all children and young people. We will have access to a wealth of resources and events to further enrich Music lessons and a broader curriculum.

Special Needs at Brookfield

It was lovely to meet you parents via the phone in our SEND planning meetings. It was a great opportunity to discuss with teachers and parents how best to support children at Brookfield.

If you have any concerns or have any questions and would like to talk to me  please feel free to contact me at l.smale@brookfield.camden.sch.uk or by phoning the school office (020 7272 9627).

Year 6 Maths

This week, year 6 have really enjoyed their maths topic: ratio. They have been using and applying their knowledge of ratio to ‘scale up’ items in found in the classroom. The children loved this lesson, which Lucy has referred to as ‘Giant School!’

Well done year 6!

The Spooky Show – Lauderdale House

Lauderdale House have come up with a Covid safe alternative and transformed our annual Spooky Walk (attended by 400 people each year since 1999 and a favourite fixture in many Highgate family calendars) into The Spooky Show – a cross between Halloween and panto – it will be a socially distanced performance on the tea lawn where the action happens around the audience. And in an attempt to ‘beat’ any half term lockdowns we’ve brought it forward to next week 21st, 22nd and 23rd October with half hour performances every night at 5pm, 6pm and 7pm.

See the below link for more information and how to book:

Imaginary creatures take over Swiss Cottage Library and launch new exhibition and creative activity pack

In Autumn 2019, Camden Learning partnered with House of Illustration to work with a Year 4 class at Carlton Primary School on a special project. Through a series of workshops and a gallery visit, pupils learnt a range of illustration techniques and the Museum of the Imagination was born – with all its exhibits and characters invented and drawn by the class. In between sessions they worked with their teacher to create a series of poems to accompany their designs.

Their characters first appeared in print earlier this year inside a fun augmented reality booklet (available here as a PDF – download the accompanying app and watch the characters come to life through your phone!).

Now you can visit a new online exhibition and uncover the story of how the class designed the exhibits and thought up their characters’ looks, movements and words. But wait there’s more! Head down to Swiss Cottage Library to spot these extraordinary ‘imaginings’ let loose on the outside of the building and inside the lobby. Think you can find them all? (Here’s our visual guide to help you hunt for the imaginings!).

This project was delivered collaboratively with the education team at House of Illustration, illustrators Pencil & Help, augmented reality specialists Arcade and of course the wonderful staff and pupils from Carlton Primary School, in partnership with the Arts Development team at Camden Council and the Mayor of London.

To view the new online exhibition about the project visit www.museumoftheimagination.co.uk and you can create your own imaginary museum with our downloadable activity pack.

Camden Alive is a programme of arts and cultural events that celebrates the people of Camden.

Weekly Update from Camden Council

PTA NEWS

Hallowe’en #1: Pumpkins – Buy, Carve, Win

The PTA will be selling pumpkins for Hallowe’en Tuesday-Thursday next week from the Junior playground entrance. You can either order and pay for your pumpkin online or pay with a card on pick up (no cash, sorry).

Get your pumpkin from school, and enter our photo competition. Carve your pumpkin, take a photo and send it to the PTA email. The best entries will be on the school website and Instagram account and we’ll try to drum up a prize for the winner.

Hallowe’en #2: Trail on the 31st

With Trick or Treating a bit uncertain (does anyone know these days?) you can still entertain the kids with a safely-distanced Hallowe’en trail.

The plan is on the 31st to have a pumpkin viewing trail. Anyone wanting to be part of it, please contact Genevieve or Rahma if you’d like your home to be included.

Kids Quiz

We will be running three Zoom quizzes for kids in November. We are going to do it in three groups – KS1 (reception to y2); Years 3&4; and Years 5&6. (Obviously with siblings etc this is not formal, just an idea of where we are pitching it.).

Our plan is to do it on the afternoons of 12th and 13th November. Stay tuned for more details. No prizes, just a bit of fun and hopefully no tears, unlike in the adult quiz.

Raise money while doing the shopping online

Did you know you can raise money for Brookfield while shopping online? It costs you LITERALLY nothing. All you need to do is add the easyFundraising plug in on your browser and it automatically does the rest.

Find out how to do it here. Sainsbury’s, Amazon, eBay, John Lewis – you can raise money any time you make a purchase.

If we all did it, we could massively change the PTA’s fundraising. So far we have 134 people signed up (7 new in the past week – thank you to those seven as well as the other recent sign-ups), so if we could get to 200 that would be fantastic.

Support your school with a mask

You can still order your I love Brookfield mask – a bargain at £5.

BUY YOUR MASK HERE (and we’ll deliver to you). (Also – we should all be wearing them at the school gates. )
