At Brookfield we believe that physical education is a key component of children’s overall education and development. It enables children to improve their core motor skills as well as developing self esteem, social inclusion, team work and fitness. The children are taught a range of sports which are season specific, eg
Autumn term = netball/ basketball/ football, hockey
Spring term = gymnastics/ dance and benchball
Summer term = cricket/ rounders and athletics
Lessons start with a thorough warm up led by teachers and children. Children enjoy taking responsibility for leading the warm ups and these opportunities help to develop the children’s leadership and management skills. During lessons, all children are encouraged to demonstrate a specific skill to the class and are also given responsibility to coach and support each other. Children are monitored and supported closely and provided with constructive feed back. At the end of each lesson the children are assessed on the key skills that they have learnt.
In line with the National curriculum, at the beginning and end of each half-term we focus on fitness training, where all of the children participate in circuits, beep tests and core work outs. This is designed to boost the children’s overall fitness levels. Gymnastics continues to be a key priority and many of the children can now achieve a high level of technical gymnastics and are very confident in their own achievements.
In addition to the core offer of PE we also provide a wide range of extra curricula activities including cross country running, football, netball, ball sports, yoga and tag rugby.
Swimming is provided for children at the end of Year 3 and beginning of Year 4 and we also offer additional swimming sessions further up the school for children who weren’t able to achieve their 25 metre distance first time around. We also take a very active role in the Camden School Sports Assocation (CSSA) and compete in many of their tournaments. We have enjoyed recent successes in cross country, benchball, basketball, netball, swimming and football.

Head of PE
All children are encouraged to represent the school in PE at Brookfield and undertake a fair selection process. Whilst we are ambitious to achieve well – as evidenced by our burgeoning trophy cabinet – we also recognise that it is important to be inclusive. With this in mind, the school has taken a lead in organised a range of different intra-school competitions as well as participating in inclusive events organising by the Camden Schools Sports Association.
Half Marathon Challenge
As we are all aware, obesity and inactivity represent a widespread threat to health and well being in this country. By taking part in this challenge it allowed us to promote a healthy and more active lifestyle for our pupils. We encouraged them to enter the Vitality North London Half Marathon Schools’ Challenge – aimed at primary school pupils of all abilities.
Last year we had 94 children taking part and raised over £1100 for the two children’s charities the challenge supported – St. Luke’s Hospice and Noah’s Ark Hospice.
This year we have continued our participation and support, entering 34 children and raising over £400 respectively.
Each child experienced the buzz of participating in the race and the excitement of being in an iconic venue (Wembley Stadium) when crossing the finish line. Pupils covered a total of 12.1 miles prior to race day (achieved and verified at school and/or at home), and the finale of the challenge took place on the day of the half marathon in front of thousands of spectators. Pupils completed the final mile in and around Wembley stadium, with teachers and parents. They each received their very own goody bag, half marathon medal and precious memories of the event!

We feel that the association has given children a unique opportunity. They are able to compete against other athletes, in a fun yet competitive environment, as well as forge many new friendships between schools and individual children.
Located in the heart of London, The Place is a creative powerhouse for dance development that is leading the way in dance training, creation and performance. We are proud members of their Partner School scheme.
